f.lux Guide: Automatically Adjust Screen Color Temperature to Protect Your Eyes

f.lux: Your Eyes Finally Won’t Hurt After Late-Night Computing

One-sentence solution: Does the white screen glare hurt your eyes when using the computer with the lights off? f.lux automatically warms up your screen colors, making it much more comfortable.

Have you ever noticed that looking at the same screen feels different during the day versus at night? During the day with ample ambient light, the white screen looks normal. At night when it’s dark, the same white light feels especially harsh — that’s blue light causing trouble.

Blue light suppresses melatonin production, tricking your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, leading to difficulty falling asleep and poor sleep quality. f.lux is designed to solve this problem.

What is f.lux?

f.lux is a screen color temperature auto-adjustment tool. It automatically adjusts your screen’s color temperature based on sunrise and sunset times in your location: keeping normal cool colors during the day and gradually transitioning to warm colors after sunset.

The problem it solves: Reduce blue light stimulation to your eyes when using the computer at night, protect your vision, and improve sleep quality.

User Experience

After installing f.lux, you won’t notice any immediate change. But after sunset, you’ll find the screen colors imperceptibly warming — white backgrounds become warm yellow. The transition is so gradual your eyes barely notice it.

The next morning, the screen slowly returns to normal color temperature.

Effect: After using the computer for 30 minutes at night, eye fatigue is noticeably reduced compared to before. Falling asleep is also easier if you’ve been using the computer before bed.
