Joplin: Don’t Trust Your Notes to Any Big Tech Company

One-sentence solution: Want Evernote’s sync features but also Obsidian’s open-source privacy? Joplin adds end-to-end encrypted sync to Markdown notes.

There are many note apps available today, but they all share a common problem: either you use Notion and store your data on someone else’s server, or you use Obsidian and store data locally but have to handle sync yourself.

Joplin offers a middle ground.

What Is Joplin?

Joplin is an open-source note app supporting Markdown editing, tag management, to-do items, and most importantly — end-to-end encrypted cross-device sync.

The problem it solves: Keeping your note data both secure (end-to-end encrypted) and convenient (automatic sync), without relying on any specific vendor’s cloud service.

Joplin’s Key Features

  • End-to-End Encrypted Sync: Notes are encrypted before being uploaded to the cloud — even the cloud provider can’t read them
  • Multiple Sync Options: Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, WebDAV, Joplin Cloud
  • Markdown Editor: WYSIWYG Markdown editing
  • Tags + Notebooks: Two-layer categorization
  • Web Clipper: Browser extension, one-click save web pages to Joplin
  • Plugin System: Extensible functionality
  • All Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android

Joplin’s strength is “encrypted sync.” If you need to sync notes across multiple devices and don’t want your data exposed on the cloud, Joplin is the best choice.
