XnView MP — View 500+ Formats and Batch Process, the Swiss Army Knife of Image Management

In a nutshell: View, browse, batch convert formats, batch rename, batch add watermarks — all in one software, supporting over 500 image formats.

Remember How Painful It Was Batch Processing 200 Photos Last Time?

You need to convert 200 product images from PNG to JPG, uniformly resize them to 1200px wide, and add your company watermark to the bottom-right corner. The workflow: open PS → record action → batch process → wait → save. Or use an online tool: upload 200 → wait for upload → wait for processing → download one by one.

If you frequently need to apply uniform processing to large numbers of images — format conversion, resize, watermark, renaming — you need a dedicated batch processing tool.

XnView MP’s positioning is clear: viewer + browser + manager + batch processor. It integrates “image viewing” and “batch processing” into one interface. Left panel is the folder tree, center is a large thumbnail grid, right panel shows previews of selected images. Select a batch → right-click → batch convert → set format/size/watermark/filters → execute with one click. Setup takes under 10 seconds, then it processes in the background.

XnView MP Core Capabilities

1. Format Coverage: 500+

XnView MP can read over 500 image formats, including all mainstream formats and a vast number of professional/legacy formats you’ve probably never heard of (various camera RAW formats, old software proprietary formats, various scientific imaging formats). It can write/convert about 70 formats.

For practical use, the most important thing: almost any image file you receive, XnView MP can open.

2. Batch Conversion: Format, Size, Watermark All at Once

Select a batch of images → Ctrl+U (Batch Convert), a fully featured conversion panel appears:

  • Format conversion: Output to JPG/PNG/WebP/TIFF/BMP/GIF and 70 other formats
  • Resize: By pixels, by percentage, constrain only width or height, maintain aspect ratio
  • Watermark: Text watermark (custom font/color/opacity/position) or image watermark (logo overlay)
  • Filters: Brightness/contrast/sharpen/blur/grayscale/negative and 20+ other adjustable effects
  • Batch rename: Combined with format conversion, generate new filenames by rules

All settings can be saved as presets. Next time with the same requirement, just load the preset and execute.

3. Image Browser: Folder Tree + Thumbnails + Preview

XnView MP starts in browser mode by default:

  • Left panel → Folder tree (like File Explorer)
  • Center → Thumbnail grid (adjustable size, sortable)
  • Right → Selected image preview + EXIF info + histogram

This three-column layout is very efficient for photo selection and organization. Browse a folder, mark images with color labels or ratings (XnView supports XMP ratings and tags), then filter to show only “5-star” or “red-tagged” images and batch process them.

4. Metadata Editing

Select an image → right-click → “Edit Metadata” (or Ctrl+D). You can modify EXIF (shooting parameters), IPTC (copyright/description/keywords), XMP (Adobe extended metadata). For photographers and image library managers, batch adding keywords, copyright information, and photographer names is a daily necessity.

5. No Database, Pure File Browsing

XnView MP doesn’t “import” your images into some封闭 database. It browses folders directly on the filesystem. You don’t depend on XnView to manage images with other software — all tags and ratings are saved in XMP sidecar files or the image’s own metadata, not in XnView’s proprietary format.

What Real Users Say

“As an e-commerce graphic designer, my daily task was batch converting new product images from TIFF to JPG,统一 800×800, and adding store borders. With XnView MP, I set up a preset once and click it daily. Three seconds replaced the previous 20-minute PS batch process.” — E-commerce Designer, 知乎

“Regular users may not need all of XnView’s features. But if you have the pain point of ‘too many photos to organize,’ XnView’s browsing + tagging + filtering workflow is a free ACDSee/Lightroom alternative.” — Photography Enthusiast, V2EX

“XnView MP’s interface is honestly a bit retro, with high information density that might feel cluttered to beginners. But once you get used to it, every panel serves a purpose and is very efficient.” — UI Designer, 少数派

FAQ

Q: What’s the difference between XnView MP and XnView Classic? A: Classic is the old version, Windows only, stable but no longer updated. MP (Multi-Platform) is the new version, cross-platform, actively developed, with more format support and improvements. New users should choose MP by default.

Q: Can it replace Lightroom for photo management? A: It can replace the photo management part (browsing, filtering, tagging, batch processing). But Lightroom’s non-destructive editing (adjusting exposure, color,局部 retouching) isn’t available in XnView — it doesn’t have a RAW editing pipeline. You can use XnView for selection and management, and darktable or RawTherapee for RAW processing.

Q: Does XnView MP lag with large folders? A: Folders with thousands of images have a brief loading time when first opened (building thumbnail cache), then browsing is smooth. For folders with tens of thousands of images, enable thumbnail caching (Options → Browser → Cache).

XnView MP is your image butler + assembly line worker — it recognizes almost every image format, batch-processes them to your specifications, and keeps everything organized.
